Chapter 13

“Hey.” Russo squeezed my hand as he drove us northeast of Minneapolis toward a suburb of the Twin Cities. “I’d ask if you had fun at the event, but that question would be a bit ridiculous, all things considered. Do you want to talk about what’s going on?”

I massaged my forehead. “I don’t know, Jack. Melinda thinks it might be the same killer.”

“I meant about the fundraiser,” Jack said. “You didn’t look happy even before you got the call.”

“Oh.”

Jack’s hand remained in mine, though his eyes pointed forward. “Would that have anything to do with the fact that Gem found you, despite your best efforts to avoid him?”

“You saw that?”

“I see everything.” Russo gave a chuckle. “I am a federal agent, you know. Despite your lackluster attitude toward suits, we’re not all clueless.”

I couldn’t help but give a laugh despite the serious mood. “I know, Jack. It wasn’t my intention to find Gem. Certainly not my intention to be on the dance floor with him. Or Denton, for that matter.”

“But?”

“But Denton cornered me. Pulled me onto the dance floor, probably for privacy, and because he wanted to cop a feel. Make sure I wasn’t wearing a wire.”

“Did he give you anything?”

“Just the fact that he’s more involved in things than I expected.”

“You think he killed Tommy Bianchi?”

“I can’t say for certain.” I replayed the confident wink Denton had given me after the call from Melinda. “It’s definitely possible, but I doubt he’d have done it himself. That’s the thing—he’s well connected. More well connected than I gave him credit for. I guess he just caught me off guard is all. I don’t like being caught off guard.”

“Nobody does,” Russo said. “Yet it happens to us all. Cut yourself a break. You’re doing the best you can, following every lead tossed in your direction.”

“Guess who his lawyer is?”

Understanding dawned in Russo’s eyes. “I see. Mindy Hartlett’s connected to Gem and Denton?”

“Bingo,” I said. “That’s really all I learned about Denton. And it’s not all that helpful, seeing as it’s hardly private information. But then Gem cut in before I could finish questioning Denton.”

“Ah.”

“I was all flustered from confronting Denton, and I sort of told Gem what I thought about Mindy.”

“I’m guessing it wasn’t flattering?”

“Look at it from where I stand,” I said. “I dedicate my life to catching criminals. She dedicates her life to setting them free. Obviously, we have different interests. Different priorities. I warned him about her.”

“Ouch,” Russo said. “I’m sure he didn’t take that well.”

“You don’t seem surprised.”

“Gem was hoping you’d go out with him.” Russo cast a glance my way. “That’s not a secret to you or to me. When you turned him down, when you chose me, it probably stung. He moved on, and to have you questioning him probably brought a little of that sting back.”

“I didn’t mean for it to come off like that. I just... I think Gem’s a decent guy. I’m not sure Mindy’s intentions with him are pure.”

“I know you’re
